One minute sermon from John 6:51-58

From now on, I will start a short sermon for busy people based on the traditional Bible lesson (pericope), so please enjoy reading it.

The meaning of this Bible passage

"I wish I could meet my love only once again before the deprture from this world" (Izumi Shikibu, female poet AD978 ) Since ancient times, Japanese people have felt deep sadness at separation by death. This is because it brought about a painful feeling like falling into a deep abyss. Human life and death are the things that we cannot solve by our own efforts. However, according to the words of Jesus in this Gospel of John, it is promised that through the sacrifice of the cross where Jesus' body was torn and blood was shed, He will raise us up from the abyss of sorrow. The word translated as "resurrection" in the verse 54 has the same meaning as the beautiful Irish song "you raise me up". We do not try hard to endure that by ourselves. The deep meaning of the resurrection is that we are raised up by the hand of love that originates from God and is conveyed to Jesus, and we are transferred from the depths of despair to the world of bright life. It is a gift given unconditionally to those who believe that the sacrifice of the cross was for them, even when those are on the brink of death.
